Karen asked about writers journals.
I keep a variety - one that is now into volume 42 that is a life writing journal kept continuously over the last thirteen years - a big notebook journal that I sketch out ideas for poems, stories, novels, keep time lines or character studies in when I'm working on long fiction - and a little one that I can carry everywhere.
I go through phases of keeping morning pages - simply write for twenty minutes to half an hour every morning - don't edit (even in your head) - just write. A daily haiku is also a good workout from time to time.
I do think writing benefits from being exercised like a muscle. I used to sing in a choir and always found the tone and range of my voice improved over Christmas when we were most busy and singing regularly - writing is the same. Or - to change metaphors - think of an old cottage with a tap that hasn't been used for a while - when the water first flows it is brown and gritty, but as it continues to flow it clears - journal writing is like clearing out that brown, gritty water to unblock the flow of the crystal clear water :)
